Best VNC Software in 2026: Viewers and Servers Compared

This comparison is for sysadmins, help-desk technicians and home users who want to see and control another computer over the VNC (RFB) protocol and need to pick a viewer, a server, or both. The short answer: on Windows hosts use UltraVNC when you want admin features or TightVNC when you want the simplest server; on Linux servers use TigerVNC; as a free viewer on any desktop OS, TigerVNC Viewer is the safe default. RealVNC Viewer is the polished vendor option with paid plans, but since version 8.4.0 it needs an account, and free use is non-commercial only.

Facts below come from the developers’ own sites and release notes, checked on 12 October 2026. We have not run speed or image-quality tests on our own hardware, so anything about performance is marked “Not tested yet”.

The short list

ToolRoleLicencePlatformsLatest version
TigerVNCViewer and Linux serversFree, open source (GPL-2.0)Viewer: Windows, macOS, Linux; servers: Linux/Unix, plus a Windows build1.16.2 (March 2026)
UltraVNCWindows server and viewerFree, open source (GPL)Windows 7 to 11, Windows Server 2008 R2 to 20251.8.3.0 (September 2026)
TightVNCWindows server and viewerFree, open source (GPL-2.0)Windows2.8.90 (October 2026)
RealVNC ViewerViewer for RealVNC ServerShareware (conditionally free): non-commercial Lite planWindows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi, iOS, AndroidConnect Viewer 8.5.0 (August 2026)
RemminaMulti-protocol client with VNCFree, open source (GPL-2.0+)Linux, FreeBSD1.4.43 (February 2026)

All of them speak standard VNC, so a free viewer can talk to a free server from another project. Extras such as file transfer, chat or Windows-account login usually work only between components of the same project.

Best VNC server for Windows

UltraVNC: the most admin features

UltraVNC is free for personal and commercial use and runs as a Windows service for unattended access. It adds things plain VNC lacks: file transfer and chat, MS-Logon so technicians sign in with Windows or Active Directory accounts, DSM encryption plugins, a noVNC web viewer with TLS, and UltraVNC Repeater for reaching PCs behind NAT without inbound port forwarding. For mass rollout there are EXE and MSI installers, and the setup can record and replay answers with /saveinf and /loadinf.

Keep it current. The 2026 releases fixed more than ten security issues, including a heap overflow in the viewer, so an UltraVNC server left on a 2024 build is a liability.

TightVNC: the simplest silent deployment

TightVNC is a small Windows server and viewer with service mode, file transfer, view-only passwords, IP access rules and reverse connections to a listening viewer on TCP 5500. Its MSI accepts the password and service settings as properties, which makes a one-line silent install possible:

msiexec /i tightvnc-2.8.90-gpl-setup-64bit.msi /quiet /norestart ADDLOCAL=Server SERVER_REGISTER_AS_SERVICE=1 SET_USEVNCAUTHENTICATION=1 VALUE_OF_USEVNCAUTHENTICATION=1 SET_PASSWORD=1 VALUE_OF_PASSWORD=ChangeMe1

The project is maintained: 2.8.89 and 2.8.90 (October 2026) fix several security issues in the Viewer, and the developers recommend that everyone upgrade. What TightVNC does not have is built-in session encryption, so it belongs on a LAN or behind a VPN.

Which one for a Windows fleet

  • You need AD logins, a repeater or encryption without a VPN: UltraVNC.
  • You want a plain server pushed silently by Group Policy, Intune or an RMM tool: TightVNC.
  • For Windows-to-Windows work inside a domain, built-in RDP usually gives a better experience; VNC is the choice when you must see the console session the user is looking at.

Best VNC server for Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL)

TigerVNC is the VNC implementation shipped by Red Hat, Fedora and many other distributions. It gives you three servers:

  • Xvnc creates a separate virtual desktop per user, ideal for headless servers;
  • x0vncserver shares the X11 screen that is already on the monitor;
  • w0vncserver (new in 1.16.0) shares a Wayland desktop.

A persistent desktop on a headless server takes four steps. Install the package (tigervnc-server on RHEL, Rocky and Fedora; tigervnc-standalone-server on Debian and Ubuntu), run vncpasswd as the user, map a display to that user in /etc/tigervnc/vncserver.users, then start it:

echo ":1=alice" | sudo tee -a /etc/tigervnc/vncserver.users
sudo systemctl enable --now vncserver@:1

Display :1 listens on TCP 5901. Xfce and MATE are safer desktop choices on Xvnc than GNOME. If you use x0vncserver, update to 1.16.2: versions 1.16.1 and 1.16.2 fix a flaw that let other local users observe and control the shared screen.

When a whole team needs Linux desktops, ThinLinc is built on TigerVNC and adds load balancing and a web client; it is shareware (conditionally free), with the client always free.

Best VNC viewer for Windows, Mac and Linux

  • TigerVNC Viewer runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. On Windows the 64-bit viewer is a single .exe that runs without installation and without admin rights; on macOS it ships as a .dmg and asks for the accessibility permission on first use.
  • UltraVNC Viewer is Windows-only and is the one to use against UltraVNC servers if you want file transfer, chat and repeater connections such as vncviewer.exe -proxy repeater.example.com:5901 ID:1234.
  • TightVNC Viewer comes in the same installer as the server; pick Custom setup for viewer only.
  • Remmina is the practical choice on a Linux desktop if you also need RDP, SSH and SFTP in one client with saved profiles. It has no official Windows or macOS build.
  • RealVNC Viewer covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi, iOS and Android. From 8.4.0 (now RealVNC Connect Viewer) you must sign in and stay signed in, and connections to third-party VNC servers such as TightVNC, TigerVNC or UltraVNC are a paid-plan feature and are not encrypted. The older v7 app, now called RealVNC Classic Viewer, is offered only to Premium and Enterprise customers.

Not tested yet: frame rate, latency and image quality of these viewers on our own LAN and over the internet.

Is VNC secure?

Classic VNC authentication accepts passwords of at most 8 characters, and plain RFB traffic is not encrypted. TightVNC has no built-in encryption at all; UltraVNC needs a DSM plugin or its noVNC TLS viewer; TigerVNC supports TLS with anonymous or X.509 certificates; RealVNC encrypts end to end only when the other side runs RealVNC Server. Whatever you pick:

  1. Never forward TCP 5900 (or 5901+) from the internet. Put the hosts behind WireGuard or OpenVPN, or use an SSH tunnel:
    ssh -L 5901:localhost:5901 alice@server

then connect the viewer to localhost:1.

  2. Limit the firewall rule to your admin subnet, for example on Windows:
    netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="VNC admin" dir=in action=allow protocol=TCP localport=5900 remoteip=10.0.10.0/24
  3. Patch the server and the viewer. TightVNC, UltraVNC and TigerVNC all shipped security fixes in 2026.
  4. Prefer account-based login (UltraVNC MS-Logon, TigerVNC system accounts) over one shared VNC password.

The remote access security checklist covers logging, MFA and backups for the rest of the stack.

Limitations of VNC as a whole

  • No built-in NAT traversal, address book or cloud relay in the free projects: you need a VPN, SSH, open ports or UltraVNC Repeater.
  • No audio forwarding in TigerVNC, TightVNC or UltraVNC; TigerVNC has no file transfer, so use SCP or SFTP alongside.
  • macOS has no free third-party VNC server from these projects; to control a Mac, enable its built-in Screen Sharing and connect with any of the viewers above.
  • If you mainly support users across the internet without a VPN, an ID-based tool such as RustDesk is easier to roll out. See best free remote desktop software and self-hosted remote access for those options.

How to choose

  1. Decide what the host runs. Windows: UltraVNC or TightVNC. Linux: TigerVNC. Many Linux users: ThinLinc.
  2. Decide how you reach it. Same LAN or VPN: any free server. Behind someone else’s router: UltraVNC Repeater or a reverse connection to a listening viewer.
  3. Check the licence for work use. TigerVNC, UltraVNC and TightVNC are free for commercial use; RealVNC’s free Lite plan is not.
  4. Pick one viewer for the team. TigerVNC Viewer on mixed desktops; UltraVNC Viewer if the servers are UltraVNC; Remmina on Linux workstations.

FAQ

Which VNC viewer is best?

For free, cross-platform use, TigerVNC Viewer: it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and connects to any standard VNC server. Use UltraVNC Viewer against UltraVNC servers to keep their extras, and RealVNC Viewer only if your hosts run RealVNC Server.

Is VNC Viewer free?

TigerVNC, UltraVNC, TightVNC and Remmina are free and open source, including for business use. The RealVNC Viewer download is free, but RealVNC’s free Lite plan is non-commercial only.

What is the best VNC server for Ubuntu?

TigerVNC: install tigervnc-standalone-server, set a password with vncpasswd, map a display in /etc/tigervnc/vncserver.users and start vncserver@:1 with systemd.

What is the best VNC server for Windows 11?

UltraVNC 1.8.3.0 supports Windows 7 to 11 and adds MS-Logon, encryption plugins and a repeater. TightVNC 2.8.90 is the simpler alternative for LAN use.

Is VNC encrypted by default?

Not in the classic protocol. TigerVNC can use TLS, UltraVNC needs a plugin or its TLS web viewer, and TightVNC has no encryption, so run it over a VPN or SSH tunnel.

VNC vs RDP: which is better?

For Windows hosts, RDP generally offers audio and drive redirection and a smoother session. VNC wins when you need to see the user’s actual console screen or connect to Linux and mixed systems with one standard protocol.
