DWService is a free, browser-based remote access service: you install a small open-source agent on a Windows, macOS or Linux machine and then control it from any web browser after signing in to your DWService account. It suits sysadmins who look after scattered servers and PCs, small IT shops and home users who want remote desktop, shell and file access without opening ports. The DWService download is free, the agent is open source (core under MPL-2.0), and every feature is available on the free plan; paid plans only raise the bandwidth.

DWService is run by DWSNET s.r.l. in Italy. The agent connects outwards to DWService relay nodes, so the remote machine can sit behind NAT or a home router. There are no numbered releases to track: installed agents update themselves, and the public agent source on GitHub was last updated in September 2026.

What it does

  • Screen: remote desktop in the browser, with keyboard, mouse and clipboard.
  • Shell: a terminal on the remote machine (bash on Linux and macOS, a command prompt on Windows) without SSH or an open port.
  • Files and Folders: browse, upload and download files; Text Editor edits configuration files in place.
  • Log Watch and Resources: follow log files and watch CPU, memory, disk and processes.
  • Two modes: Install keeps the agent running as a service; Run starts a temporary session that ends when the window is closed.
  • Sharing: give another DWService user access to an agent, restricted to certain apps or folders, read-only, or with mouse and keyboard disabled.
  • Installation by one-time code or account credentials, including silent installs for scripting.

How IT teams use it

Add a headless Linux server

  1. In your DWService account create a new agent; the site shows a numeric installation code.
  2. Get the dwagent.sh installer from the official download page onto the server, then run the console wizard:
    sudo bash dwagent.sh -console
  3. Choose 1 (Install), accept the default path /usr/share/dwagent, then choose 1 again to enter the installation code.
  4. Type #BACK to go back a step or #EXIT to quit the wizard.
  5. The server now appears in your agent list; open Shell or Resources from the browser.

Deploy agents silently

  1. Create an installation code per machine, or use account credentials with a name and group.
  2. On Windows, run from an elevated prompt:
    dwagent.exe -silent key=xxx-xxx-xxx logpath=C:Tempdwagent.log
  3. On Linux the same parameters work with the shell installer:
    sudo bash dwagent.sh -silent user=admin@example.com password=*** name=web01 group=Servers logpath=/tmp/dwagent.log
  4. Check the log file if the agent does not appear in the account; avoid leaving credentials in shell history or scripts.

Give a contractor limited access

1. Open the agent’s sharing options and invite the contractor’s DWService account.
  2. Restrict access to the apps they need, for example Files and Folders only, limited to one folder and set to read-only.
  3. Disable mouse and keyboard if they only need to watch the screen, and remove the share when the job is done.

Install and first run

Windows. The installer asks whether to Install or Run. Installing creates a service so the machine stays reachable after reboots and at the sign-in screen; that needs administrator rights. Run is useful for one-off help: nothing remains after the window is closed.

macOS. After installing DWAgent, grant Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions in System Settings → Privacy & Security, otherwise the Screen app shows nothing or cannot send input.

Linux. The same script installs on desktop and headless systems. Shell, Files and Resources work without any graphical session; the Screen app needs a running desktop.

Network. The agent only makes outbound connections to DWService nodes, so no inbound rules are needed. Strict proxies or TLS inspection can still block it; check the troubleshooting section of the official documentation if an agent stays offline.

Limitations

  • The free plan is capped at 6 Mbps per session; paid plans raise the cap but add no features. Video playback and high-resolution desktops feel slow on the free plan.
  • All sessions are relayed through DWService infrastructure; there is no self-hosted server for the relay.
  • No numbered releases or changelog, which makes formal change control harder.
  • It is not a help-desk product: no ticketing, technician queues or session recording.
  • An account is required, and anyone with the account password can reach every agent, so enable strong credentials.

DWService vs alternatives

MeshCentral offers a similar browser console with desktop, terminal and files, but you host the server yourself. Apache Guacamole is also browser-based, but it is a gateway to existing RDP, VNC and SSH servers rather than an agent. Chrome Remote Desktop is free too but has no shell, file manager or log viewer.

FAQ

Is DWService free?

Yes. All features work on the free plan, limited to 6 Mbps per session. Paid plans only add bandwidth.

Where do I get the DWService download for Windows?

The agent installers for Windows, macOS and Linux are published on the official website, dwservice.net; the same agent covers desktops and servers.

What is a DWService installation code?

A numeric code generated when you create an agent in your account. You enter it during installation to link the machine to your account without typing your password on that machine.

Can I run DWService without installing it?

Yes. Choose Run instead of Install; the session lasts only while the agent window stays open.

Is DWService safe to use?

The agent is open source and connects outbound only. Security depends mostly on your account password and on the sharing restrictions you set.

How do I uninstall the DWService agent?

Remove DWAgent like any other application on Windows or macOS. On Linux the documented manual removal is to stop and delete the service with sudo /usr/share/dwagent/native/dwagsvc stop and ... dwagsvc delete, then remove /usr/share/dwagent and /etc/dwagent. Finally delete the agent from your account.
